Since the end of the 1980s, Peru has shared the world抯 concern to put sustianable financial schemes in place. A number of government agencies and civil society organizations initiated efforts aimed at setting up an environmental fund. When the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) was established in the 1990s, they designed a proposal to set up a fund to finance the country抯 Protected Areas. Once the initiative succeeded at the World Bank, it received the immediate support of government agencies, international cooperation agencies and a representative swath of civil society organizations. This was a key critical step in reaching what eventually became PROFONANPE抯 base model.
PROFONANPE was established on December 29, 1992 to support the conservation and management of Peru抯
PROFONANPE will have firmly established its strategic nature as SINANPE抯 financial arm. By expanding and diversifying its funding sources and mechanisms, it will have also ensured the financial sustainability of a representative number of Protected Areas and actively fostered new areas through private, and regional and municipal governments?initiatives. In addition, PROFONANPE will have become a key factor in the process to encourge and executing the participatory management model for Protected Areas.
